To join a new plastic drainpipe to an old steel pipe run new pipe into the room. Cut out a section of the stack or drain with a reciprocating saw and place the section in a heavy bag as it may have sludge on its interior. Branch drain lines run horizontally though with a slight downward slope to connect each of the fixture drain traps to soil stacks which in turn will lead to main drain lines. A drain line for the washing machine is an obvious must but a floor drain also helps while you are adding drain lines for appliances and fixtures add a floor drain at a central location in the garage floor.
