Fiber cement technology produces an extremely durable weather resistant siding. Sometimes modern stucco has lime added to it to make the stucco easier to work with and more permeable. Installing siding over existing stucco does not give us a chance to identify underlying rot issues so if you have any concerns a full removal could be your best bet. Modern stucco is a mixture of water sand and portland cement. Prep the wall to keep bits of stucco from falling between the new siding and the old stucco scrape away loose or crumbling debris from cracks in the stucco and roughly patch the cracks with mortar. Beyond removal to assess and repair rot damage sections of the wall where stucco is bulging or otherwise out of square may need to be removed in order to get an even fastening surface for hardie board.

Stucco lovers be prepared to pay what it takes because stucco is a labor intensive process that can include unexpected costs along the way.
