We have done a handful of concrete countertops in the past and wanted the same look without the two weeks of process and the steep price tag. Both granite and concrete are more heat resistant than laminate countertops or even surfaces such as quartz. Concrete is basically a mix of cement and an aggregate. Concrete is also textured unlike sealed stone counters which further introduces variety into a space.

But the concrete countertop has little in common with the concrete slab that is a sidewalk. It is recommended that you always use a trivet to protect your concrete countertop. We ve never tried to cement over granite so i am unsure how well it may work. However placing a hot pot directly on a concrete countertop can damage the sealant that protects it from stains and spills.

I would recommend getting a sample piece of granite you can usually buy a small square at stores that sell counter tops and trying it out on that before attempting it on your actual counters. People think concrete is cheaper but it is actually the same as granite because of the labor in the long run so my husband decided to go right over the existing countertop with level quick concrete. And of course these countertops often develop a patina from years of use that lends a space character unlike crisp and clean stones.

The costs are similar with a simple concrete counter being slightly less expensive.
